At Columbus Women’s Care, our team of providers ensure women in the community of Canal Winchester, Ohio have access to the solutions they need for improved reproductive health. This includes offering routine screenings such as the pap smear.
What is a pap smear?
Our doctors describe the pap smear as a screening tool used to test for several conditions that can develop in the cervix. Pap smears are routinely performed during regular pelvic examinations during a women’s health visit. In order to reach the cervix, the doctor will use a speculum to open the vaginal area. Using a special swab, cells are collected from the inside of the cervix and placed in a vial, where the cells are tested for various concerns.
What does a pap smear test for?
Pap smears are commonly performed to check for:
- Pre-cancerous cells
- Cancerous cells
- HPV
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Trichomonas
When should I get a pap smear?
In most situations, we recommend women get a pap smear for cervical cancer screening at least every three years, though some women choose to have them done annually with a routine pelvic examination with their OB/GYN. After the age of 65, most women can stop having pap smear screening as long as they have had a negative history with previous pap smears. Women who are having pap smears done to monitor for sexually transmitted diseases may want to ask their doctor if they require them more regularly.
How long does it take to get the results of a pap smear back?
In most situations, our laboratory can process the pap smear cells within a few days, with most women hearing back about their results within a week. Our team will call to let women know if anything has been spotted during the evaluation of their cervical cells, and if so, what to do next.
