An annual examination by a gynecologist is an integral part of a woman’s health at any age. May is Older Americans Month, and we want to focus on the benefits of gynecology visits once you reach 65 years old. Pap tests to detect cervical cancer are not included in the recommended screenings for older women, but you do need other types of screenings.
Recommended Cancer Screenings for Women Over 65
The incidence of cervical cancer in women decreases after age 55, but you are still at risk for other types of cancer, such as breast, uterine and ovarian. Factors that affect your risk for these cancers include family history and using hormone replacement therapy. Your annual gynecology exam changes very little and includes:
- Physical examination
- Pap test if you are 55 to 65 and sexually active
- Pelvic examination
- Breast examination
- Immunizations, such as flu shots
- Discussion of any symptoms
- Referrals for bone tests, colonoscopyand other recommended screenings
Hormone Management
Although no specific guidelines have been developed, some women over 65 may benefit from hormone replacement therapy. Using low dosages for a short period of time may help alleviate symptoms, such as hot flashes, poor bone density and intolerance to other medications.
Vaginal Resurfacing
A regular visit to your gynecologist is important for your health, but Columbus Women’s Care understands that certain aspects of your most private area may need some additional attention. We are proud to offer FemTouch™, a non-surgical vaginal resurfacing procedure that helps with:
- Urinary incontinence
- Dryness
- Poor sexual satisfaction
- Laxity
FemTouch™ is a comfortable and quick treatment that is as simple as your Pap and pelvic exam. A device that is about the size of a tampon is inserted into the vaginal canal. Laser energy is used to gently heat the vaginal walls to stimulate natural collagen production.
