The neck and chin frame the face, so when excess fatty tissue lives in the submental area, a double-chin is created. If you’ve noticed that accumulation of fat beneath your chin, chances are you feel more than a little disturbed by how this has affected your appearance. The double-chin has long been problematic for men and women of all ages. In today’s selfie-obsessed society, there is no time for submental fullness and the challenge it poses to our photographic poses. If you would like to look your best at every angle, speak with our providers to decide what is best for you.

- Incredible results
- No downtime
- Destroys fat cells
Who Is a Good Candidate for Kybella?
Men and women over the age of 18 who are in good general health may be excellent candidates for Kybella. If they want a cosmetic treatment to reduce the appearance of a double-chin. A thorough consultation and exam are performed prior to treatment to evaluate the laxity and elasticity of the skin under the chin. Kybella acts on fat cells only. Therefore, if skin is excessively loose, adjunct treatments may be needed after Kybella injections to achieve optimal refinement of the chin and jawline.
How Does Kybella Work?
When introduced into subcutaneous fatty tissue just beneath the skin, the deoxycholic acid in Kybella disrupts the structure of the membrane around fat cells. Without adequate external lining, these cells essentially burst, unable to hold their fatty contents. Subsequent to the destruction of targeted fat cells, the body responds by flushing them through the lymphatic system. These cells are no longer in the body, and will not grow back.
What Concerns Can Kybella Help Correct?
Kybella has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of submental fullness. This is the fat that accumulates under the chin, causing the appearance of puffiness and sagging. Kybella injections do not tighten the skin but patients who have good elasticity usually experience optimal retraction, achieving a smooth, sculpted jawline.
*Individual results may vary from patient to patient.
What Are The Benefits Of Kybella?
Kybella is a popular double-chin treatment primarily because it does not require anesthesia or incisions. There are few side effects associated with this injectable, so patients need not schedule time off work to recover from their treatment. While it takes some time for the effects of Kybella to become visible, patients like that this approach to fat-reduction works naturally and can achieve lasting improvements.
What Results Can Kybella Achieve?
Kybella works naturally to dissolve fat cells. Once affected, these cells can no longer store fat. However, it can take up to six weeks following treatment for the chin to look slimmer and more sculpted. Because the cells targeted by the deoxycholic acid in Kybella do not grow back and are permanently disabled, it is not expected that patients will need further treatment beyond their recommended series of appointments.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Most patients need between 2 and 6 treatments to fully correct submental fullness. We may estimate the number of treatments needed after an initial consultation, and this may change based on the way your body responds to initial treatment. Treatments are scheduled in intervals of about 4 weeks.
How Long Does Kybella Last?
It is possible for results from Kybella treatment to last indefinitely when a healthy lifestyle is maintained. Weight gain and aging may both affect the long-term results of injectable double-chin treatment, not because new fat cells grow, but because existing fat cells expand. Laxity that results from the loss of collagen may, with age, display slight drooping beneath the chin. Fortunately, there are non-invasive treatments for this age-related problem, as well.
Are Kybella Injections Painful?
No. We apply a topical anesthetic before starting Kybella injections. This stays on the skin for several minutes to properly desensitize the superficial nerve endings in the skin. The needle used to administer Kybella is also very small. Patients may feel a slight pinch with each injection but this is usually mild. Treatment is well-tolerated by most people.
Recovery After Kybella Injections
Kybella has no real downtime needed to recover from injections. Some patients do feel slight discomfort after their treatment session, though we try to secure comfort by using topical numbing medication prior to injections. If tenderness or soreness occur post-treatment, ice may be applied to the area. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen may also be taken to improve temporary discomfort.
Aside from managing comfort, there are no specific aftercare instructions for patients. The area may be washed and shaved, and patients may resume physical activity, including exercise, as soon as they wish.
Kybella Side Effects
While there is no downtime after treatment, there are some side effects that are noticeable enough that you will want to plan around them. Specifically, what patients notice after each treatment session is an expansion of volume beneath the chin. The reason why this occurs is because fat cells are soaking up the deoxycholic acid that has been injected, and tissue is temporarily expanding with spilled fat content. Over the course of two to three weeks, this swelling subsides.
