Unless you’re a professional marathon runner, odds are you have pockets of fat here and there that are seemingly impervious to any efforts you make to remove them. Changes in diet and exercise don’t seem to do anything, and the fact remains. The typical locations of this unwanted, stubborn fat? The abdomen, flanks, even your bra line.
But CoolSculpting can show that fat who’s the boss. CoolSculpting at Columbus Women’s Care uses controlled cooling to remove up to 25 percent of the fat in the treated areas. All without incisions or needles, without recovery or downtime. How cool is that?
out recovery or downtime. How cool is that?
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting was developed by a pair of Harvard scientists originally studying the effect of eating popsicles on the development of dimples in children. It turned out the cold killed the fat cells and created dimples, which appear when there is an absence of fat in the cheeks. From there, the scientists decided to apply the same thinking to fat pockets in adults. CoolSculpting was the result.
The concept behind CoolSculpting is simple — fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than other tissue cells, so deliver controlled freezing into targeted fat pockets and kill the fat cells while leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged. This freezing crystallizes 20 to 25 percent of the fat cells in the treated area. Those cells die and are flushed from the body naturally.
Since its FDA approval and debut in 2010, CoolSculpting has become the world’s most popular non-invasive body contouring procedure, having been performed on over six million people around the world.
How does CoolSculpting work?
In a CoolSculpting session, a member of our Columbus Women’s Care team positions the CoolSculpting panels over the treatment area. The panels then deliver light suction to the skin and underlying tissue, drawing the skin and underlying fat up between two cooling panels.
Next, the temperature is set to the freezing point of the fat cells, and this controlled degree of cooling is delivered into the tissue between the panels. The fat cells are crystallized and gradually die, and the body flushes them away using the lymphatic system. Once those fat cells are gone, the remaining fat cells condense into a thinner fat layer.
We repeat this process several times across the target area to cover it entirely. All in all, a session takes from one to three hours, depending on the size of the treatment area.
Would CoolSculpting be right for me?
All of us have stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise. That’s what CoolSculpting addresses. But it is not a weight-loss procedure. Patients need to be at or near their ideal weight to have the procedure.
The FDA has approved CoolSculpting to freeze and eliminate up to a quarter of the fat in these areas:
- Double chin
- Back fat
- Bra line fat
- Underneath the buttocks
- Upper arms
What are the benefits of CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting destroys from 20 to 25 percent of the fat in treated areas. This all happens without incisions or anesthesia. There isn’t any recovery. During your CoolSculpting session at Columbus Women’s Care, you can read, watch videos, work on your laptop, or even take a nap. What in that didn’t strike you as a benefit? A quarter less fat without any repercussions. CoolSculpting is truly a cool body contouring treatment, and we’re proud to offer it to our patients from Columbus and the surrounding areas.
What should I expect during my CoolSculpting session?
CoolSculpting is totally non-invasive. As the skin is drawn up between the cooling panels there is a slight pulling sensation. Once the cooling is applied you will feel a few minutes of intense cold. Most people don’t equate this with pain, and the sensation passes as the area becomes numb for the remainder of the application to that area. The procedure doesn’t demand any action on your part; our patients read, watch videos, work on their laptops, or even take a nap during their sessions.
At Columbus Women’s Care, we have both applicator panels for our CoolSculpting treatments. One set of panels is for larger areas, such as the flanks. The other applicators, called CoolMini, are used on smaller areas, such as under the jawline (the dreaded double chin) or for the bra line.
Is there any downtime after my CoolSculpting session?
Patients sometimes feel some slight tingling across the application area after their session. We massage the area for two to three minutes to help relieve numbness. After that, you can get back to your regular activities immediately. There is not any downtime with CoolSculpting, which makes its fat reduction all the more remarkable.
What are the risks with CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a popular, safe, non-invasive method of fat reduction with little risk and few side effects when compared to liposuction. Patients feel a pinching sensation where the cooling panels pull the skin, but that is followed by intense cooling that passes as the skin in the area becomes numb. It is normal for patients to experience some numbness or loss of sensation in the treatment area for up to a month.
These are the other risks/side effects of CoolSculpting. All of these effects pass quickly:
- Pinching sensation
- Minor swelling
- Stinging, tingling
- Skin sensitivity
- Mild to moderate pain
- Muscle cramping
Some people have some diarrhea as the body flushes the dead fat cells from the system. If you have CoolSculpting done on a double chin, there can be a feeling of fullness in the throat after treatment.
When will I see results from CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting results are not immediate; it takes time for the body to shed the dead fat cells. As the body begins to discard these cells you will begin to see changes. Some patients begin to see changes after around three weeks, but the most dramatic results will show themselves after about two months. The body will continue to shed more fat cells for up to six months after your session.
Is CoolSculpting permanent?
The fat cells crystallized through CoolSculpting are gone for good. That fat reduction is permanent. Of course, if you gain weight you can rebuild fat, but it tends to rebuild elsewhere before it returns to the treatment sites. But maintain a healthy weight and you’ll love your new slimmer contour the rest of your life.
How does CoolSculpting compare with liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure where a cannula (a thin tube with suction) is inserted under the skin through an incision. The cannula is moved back and forth to break loose and suction away the unwanted fat cells. The movement of the cannula can cause some bleeding and tissue trauma. This can create extensive bruising and swelling. Although liposuction has become much less traumatic than it was 25 years ago when it was first introduced, it still requires recovery and some downtime. It is still an invasive, surgical procedure.
CoolSculpting is completely non-invasive. There are no incisions or blood loss. The cooling panels are applied to the outer skin that has been drawn up for the targeted cooling. There is a short period of intense cooling, but the treatment area then becomes numb and you don’t feel a thing. There isn’t any recovery after CoolSculpting, so you can return to work or your normal activities immediately.
